Mid winter 2011 Snowy Mountains fishing report

31/8/11
Just a short report from the Snowy Mountains. Three outings last week resulted in 37 trout.

The first trip was polaroiding Lake Jindabyne with regular fishing partner Chris Mills. Plenty of rainbows in the margins and for the first time we are seeing some bows hunting and other groups making reds in the lake. There are also a few browns showing up. The rainbows in Lake Jindabyne do not normally hunt the edges and we are thinking that there must be less daphnia than prior years causing a change in habits.

Two days later we hit the water again this time opting for long drifts along the shore. Fast sinking lines and teams of three flies did the job and again plenty of responses and fish landed. You can get more information on loch style fly fishing on my web site.

Best flies for the two Lake Jindabyne outings were the bibio, dunkeld and small brown bugger. All are featured on my web site www.fishonfly.com.au.

Two days later again Rick Sunderland and I fished parts of Buckenderra for 22 fish. Again this was a loch style fishing outing. Very different flies did the job with the best being small black woolly buggers with plenty of flash.

Frosty morning here at -2 degrees. No problems ... confident the frost will burn off by 10am and deliver another stunning polaroiding day for Jindabyne.

Also off to Tantangara reservoir later this week to give it a run in preparation for the first Fly Fish Australia NSW Chapter competition for the year in September.

A tough life but somebody has to do it.

Post script:
Polaroided this corker 68.2 cm brown directly in front of my house on an unweighted size#12 bag fly I tied only minutes earlier.

I took the measurements of the fish and it was 68.2 cm long and 40cm round its widest girth. In terms of weight I worked that out using my 'power law equation' as being 3.75 kg or 8.26 lb in the old money.

The calculation is set out below:

Weight = 0.0000197 x (68.2x68.2x(68.2x0.6))
= 0.0000197 x (68.2x68.2x40.92)
= 0.000197 x 190328
= 3.75 kilogram or 8.26 pounds
