Deer hair – hot legs

AKA: Hot legs - deer hair
First brought to my attention by members of the Jassid Fly Fishing Club in Tasmania this technique was found on the Sexyloops website. For those of us that subscribe to the impressionistic side of fly tying this is a great technique of representing legs and feelers on flies. It an extension of  the loop dubbing technique that uses deer hair as the dubbing material rather than the traditional softer wool, fur and synthetic dubbing materials. Working with deer hair in this way to make hot legs can be a bit messy but its well worth the effort and the clean up.

Process

A
  1. Cut some deer hair about 1.5cm long. If your deer hair is a little longer or shorter don't worry.
  2. If you have butt ends left on your deer hair patch  you can use them as long as there about 1.5 cm long.

B
  1. Put the deer hair into the palm of your hand and using the other hand roll it into a fur ball.

C
  1. Tease out the fur ball and manipulate it into a dubbing loop.

D
  1. DUsing your dubbing loop tool wind the dubbing loop that has been pre loaded with the deer hair into a deer hair rope. If to many of the deer hair ends are getting trapped as you twist the thread you may want to pause occasionally to tease more end out with a bodkin or with a piece of male Velcro.

E
  1. E\Wind on "hot legs" rope forward in touching turn.
  2. Tie the "hot legs" rope off and trim the excess.
  3. Hold the deer hair out of the way whilst you build up a neat head.
  4. Whip finish and varnish the head.
  5. Stroke the deer hair legs down and back to represent the legs and trim any that look out of place.
