Colour pallet

When I am talking about big soft plastics I have in mind the soft plastics I carry when targeting species such as but not limited to:

Barramundi (both freshwater & saltwater)
Kingfish (Yellowtail and Cobia)
Lutjanids (Mangrove Jack & Fingermark
Javelin fish (Barred Grunter and Silver Grunter)
Flathead (Dusky and Bartail)
Trevally (including Giant Trevally and Golden Trevally)
Queenfish
Reef fish
Mackerel

By in large I favour soft plastics that have a dark top and a lighter underside and have plenty of shoulder, body and tail movement so that in the retrieve the tail and body osculate between the back and belly colours making the soft plastic obvious and attractive to nearby fish

These are the colour combinations I prefer when either buying soft pastic off the shelf or making my own.

These are the colours I like best for soft plastic baits either on their own or in combinations.

SOLID COLORS

TWO TONE TRANSLUCENT COLOURS

DAY GARFISH

  • This has been my favourite full moon dusk lures bother leading up to and used it in that role in the 2019 Awoonga which Scott and I cam fifth in. It seems that is also a favorite time for Barra to traget Snub Nose Garfish. I generally fish them on a lighter weight so that they swim sub surface just like to natural.
  • The belly is clear plastersol with a generous amount of silver fleck and the back is clear plastersol with 1 drop per 50mil of gold and a generous amount blue fleck.
  • Day Garfish

    Night garfish

  • I fish this colour combination in that darkening period between the full moon dusk and dark.
  • The belly is clear plastersol with a generous amount of silver fleck and just enough white colouring to make the belly look like translucent water down milk and the the back is solid white.
  • Night garfish.

    Dark Ale inspired

  • There is no denying the success of the Zerek Dark Ale Live Mullet or the many other lures that have adopted that colour combination.
  • Prior to recognizing that I have had a number of iterations of an Alfa Gar with a gold body and dark back. I have now swapped the belly over to resembling the belly of the Zerek Dark Ale.
  • The back remains the same and is made up of black that I have recovered for all sorts of older soft plastics and consequently has all sorts and colours of bits of flex in it.The belly has been swapped from almost solid gold to clear plastersol with a sprinkling of 0.3mm to .9mm gold hex flash.
