Blue & teal variant

A variant of a old English wet fly this variant is in the same class as an Alexandra this fly as an attractor fly particularly when rainbows are the target. It is different to the original in that the dyed blue hackle has been replaced by blue barbells from the chest feathers of a male peacock and the body is "Glamor" thread fuzzeled with silver UV dubbing.

Materials

Hook Thread Weight Tail Body Beard Wing
8 to 12 long shank (Tiemco 3761) Black 5 wraps of 0.015 lead wire Golden Pheasant tail tips Blue "Glamour" thread and silver UV dubbing Peacock chest feather barbells Teal Chest feathers barbells

Process

A
  1. Wind the thread in touching turns 1/4 of the way  down the hook shank.
  2. Tie in lead and take 5 wraps of the lead wire.
  3. Continue winding thread to the bend of the hook.
  4. Tie in a tail of Golden pheasant tail tips which is about one half to three quarters of the length of the hook long.
  5. Take the thread back to just behind where the lead wire was tied in and tie in a length of multi strand blue thread along the top of the hook shank. The thread I use is called "Glamour Madeira No 8". This is an over lock thread consisting of around six individual threads. The colour is no 2433 and predominantly a silver / blue.

B
  1. Rub a pinch of silver UV dubbing onto the thread (this is often referred to as fuzzeling).
  2. Wind the multi strand fuzzeled thread back toward the eye of the hook to about the 90% position in touching turns, tie the multi strand thread off and trim the excess.

C
  1. Turn the the hook upside down in the vice.
  2. Tie in a beard of peacock chest feather barbells with the tips obscuring the point of the hook and extending to the back of the bend of the hook.
  3. Trim the butt ends.

D
  1. Turn the hook back up the right way.
  2. Tie in a wing of teal chest feather barbells with the tips back just behind the back of the hook.
  3. Build up a neat head of thread.
  4. Whip finish the thread, trim the excess and varnish the head.
