Epoxy midge – black with hot butt & UV cheeks

When Chironomids are around they tend to be around in large numbers and trout become quickly switched on and gorge on them. There are number of techniques to target chironomid feeders and one of my favourite is to fish three chironomid imitations with the heaviest on the point with a long leader on a floating line and fish relatively static. You will be surprised how many fish find your flies.

Process

A
  1. Put the hook in the vice with the shank hanging vertically.
  2. Tie the thread in at the bend of the hook and wind it down the shank untill your directly above the point of the hook.

B
  1. Tie in a length of holographic tinsel.
  2. I generally take the thread down toward the eye of the hook a little just to have it out of the way for the next step.

C
  1. Wind the holographic tinsel down three tight turns and then back over itself to where it was tied in.
  2. Bring the thread back up to the holographic tinsel.

D
  1. Tie the holographic tinsel off and trim away the excess.
  2. Wind the thread forward to the 95% position forming a uniform thin thread body with a diameter about twice the diameter of the hook.
  3. Take the thread back to the 75% position.

E
  1. Tie in a length of silver wire on top of the hook shank.
UV-midge-e

F
  1. Lock the wire in on top of the hook shank with tight touching turns of thread all the way to the hot butt.

G
  1. Wind the silver wire forward forming 5 or 6 body segments on the rear three quarters of the fly.

H
  1. Lock the silver wire in position with a couple of firm wraps of thread and then worry off the excess wire.
  2. Tie a length of UV tinsel in at about the 95% position using a couple of firm figure of eight wraps of thread.

I
  1. Stroke the loose ends of the UV tinsel back between you forefinger and thumb so that on each side of the fly you have one strand of UV tinsel positioned in the middle and beyond the thorax area of the fly.
  2. Whilst holding the UV tinsel in place build up a neat thorax with firm wraps of thread.

J
  1. You should now have one strand of UV tinsel facing behind the fly each positioned about half way up the thorax on opposite sides of the fly.
UV-midge-j

K
  1. Pull the UV tinsel forward with the tips passing over the top of the hook shank and directly behind the eye of the fly.
  2. Lock the UV tinsel in place with a couple of firm wraps of thread.
UV-midge-k

L
  1. Build up a neat thread head and trim away the excess thread.
UV-midge-l

M
  1. Apply a thin coat of UV resin and harden that with a UV torch.
  2. As a last step it's always worth checking that the UV resin has not sealed the hole in the eye of the hook.
