Please read this article in conjunction with the companion article:
It's a bit like asking, how long is a piece of string" when you ask how many river fly fishing techniques techniques there are. There are of course recognised techniques but even when the technique is recognised the problem is of course that each of these designated techniques can legitimately mean different things to different anglers and of course the is a lot of cross over between some of the methods. With that in mind I have grouped a number of techniques together as I have described the different techniques I use.
I approach my river fishing depending on the type of water I am fishing, the type of fish I expect to encounter and to an extent the gear I have at hand.
I have divided river fly techniques into five main classifications:
Up stream nymphing - traditional
Upstream fly fishing - contemporary approach to wet under dry (duo and trio)
Across and down (often called down and across or swinging flies)
Short line nymphing (including Polish nymphing, Spanish nymphing, and of course Czech nymphing).
French leader / longer leader
