Awoonga dam Gladstone Qld – trialling new flies

A good outing on Awonga today and managed two fish.

It was 25C/1020 BP when I left home at 6am and 35C/1002 BP when I was chased off the water at 1:30pm by an electric storm.

Despite the storm I really enjoyed the trip because it was a chance to give two articulated swimmer flies that I tied on the weekend a swim. I first posted this fly on my web site on 25th January 2015 and the idea of the new flies that I tied over the weekend was to feature a new material that I am now using on the bodies. The original flies had estaz chenille which worked well but earlier this year I swapped over to FNF Jelly which is a product that I purchased to tie blobs for the 2016 Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships. It has two advantages over the estaz chenille which are firstly it's UV and secondly it is slightly thicker which I think benefits the profile of the fly. I am sure you will see this FNF body chenille on more of my trout and saltwater flies.

I don't know if the 60cm barra is the fish I photoed on the sounder just minutes before the hook up but I have included that photo because it shows that I was fishing fairly deep water and that the water was pretty warm at 30.5C.

The barra took the pink version but I did get a couple of hits and a big cat fish on the tan and dark olive version (which is a new colour scheme dictated by the colours of FNF that are available). Both look fantastic in the water.
