Albright knot

It is a relatively thin knot but it is about twice as thick as the FG knot but they are both very strong knots.

The FG knot is my preferred knot when fishing with rods with narrow guides such as my barra rods but the Albright knot is my goto knot when I am fishing with rods with wider guides suited to bottom baiting for offshore species. The albright knot is also easier to tie and less prone to tying mistakes than the FG knot and even though it is mad of two overlapping lengths of the leader and two lengths of the backing and still passes the larger opening in the guides of my bottom baiting rods.

As I said above its relatively easy to tie and the procedure is set out below.

The albright This is the knot I use when I am joining braided backing to a leader when bottom baiting for bottom dwelling or bottom feeding species such as members of the emperor family such as red throat emperor and other reef species such as species such as tusk fish and cod.

A
  1. Select a length of leader material which is 10-20 cm longer than you want the finished leader to be.
  2. Form a loop toward the end of the leader material.
  3. I am holding it here in my right hand and you can see that the tag end is toward the top.

B
  1. Transfer the knot to your left hand.

C
  1. Place the tag end of the braid backing between the tag end of the leader and the body of the leader.

D
  1. Wind the tag end of the backing forward along the tag end of the leader and the body of the leader leaving a small gap/trough between each wrap of the tag end of the backing.
  2. I have done 8 wraps here but would do a couple of extra wraps if the leader and backing were of lighter materials.

E
  1. Wrap the tag end of the backing back down over the wraps of backing making sure that each wrap sits in the troughs between each wrap of backing.
  2. Take the tag end of the backing back between the tag end of the leader and the body of the leader in the same direction it came through in step C.

F
  1. Wet the knot and take a firm grip on the tag end of the backing and the backing itself with your left hand and a
  2. take a firm grip on the tag end of the leader and the leader itself with your right hand and pull the knot into place.
  3. Make the knot as tight as you can.
  4. Closely trim away the tag ends of the braid and the leader.
