Bass jig

Peter Morse introduced his version of this fly to the members of the Illawarra Fly Fishers Club at their first meeting for 2005. The fly was developed to cover a specific niche in Peter's Bass and Estuary Perch fishing arsenal. With a heavy lead shot head the fly sinks quickly and can as the name implies be jigged up and down in the zone. I am sure that the same pattern in a variety of colours will work on Trout as well as estuary species such as Flathead, Bream and Whiting. Peter suggested that the fly be fished on floating line and jigged along the bottom in much the same way as a soft plastic.

Process

A
  1. Crimp the lead shot onto the front shaft on the jig hook.
  2. Starting at the eye of the hook wind the cotton to the bend of the hook.
  3. Tie in a tail of about 10 strands of Krystal Flash. Make the tail a little long so that it can be trimmed to the same length as the Zonker strip bell later.
  4. Tie in a length of Krystal Chenille at the bend of the hook.

B
  1. Wind the Krystal Chenille in touching turns to just behind the lead shot, tie it off and trim the excess.

C
  1. Take the partially tied fly out of the vice.
  2. Take a length of Zonker strip and pierce the back of the Zonker strip about half to a full centimeter from it trailing end. The actual distance will be determined by the length of the fur on the Zonker strip. the preferred length for the tail is one to one and a half times as long as the Jig hook.
  3. Put the partially tied fly back in the vice.
  4. Pull the Zonker strip up under the tail and lay it flat along the underside of the body of the hook. Tie it off just behind the lead shot, tie it off and trim the excess.
Whip finish and trim the cotton just behind the lead shot.

D
  1. Stick a holographic eye on each side of the lead shot.
  2. Covering the lead shot and eyes with a thin coat of 5 minute epoxy makes the eyes much more durable.
