BIG FISH FLIES

One of the things I always promote is the importance of limiting the flies you carry in your fly boxes to just those flies that you are confident work for you, you understand when to use them and you know how to fish them.

Ask yourself these two simple questions every time you’re considering adding a fly to your fly. :

  • Is this new fly better that all the flies you carry in your fly box and are you prepared to use it to replace one of the existing flies in your fly box. or
  • Does this new fly fill a hole in your fly box for a particular occurrence or situation that is not covered by a fly already in your fly box and does that occurrence or situation happens often enough to justify it being added to your fly box?

Remember “flies catch more fly fishers than fish”.

With the above in mind over the last month or so I have reviewed the flies I carry when targeting species such as but not limited to:

Barramundi (both freshwater & saltwater)
Kingfish (Yellowtail and Cobia)
Lutjanids (Mangrove Jack & Fingermark
Javelin fish (Barred Grunter and Silver Grunter)
Flathead (Dusky and Bartail)
Trevally (including Giant Trevally and Golden Trevally)
Queenfish
Reef fish
Mackerel

I am confident that with just these 15 recipes in a range of colours from my colour selection I am ready to cover most if not all of the types of fly-fishing opportunities and species that I encounter when targeting “big fish” in both temperate and tropical fisheries.
