BMS 2

The BMS is a favourite fly at Lake Bullen Merri where it gets its name BM Special. Because of its history of success it is often regarded as a quintessential Rainbow trout fly by many Victorian fly fishers. This variant is tied with round tinsel which doubles up as a dubbing loop. In smaller sizes it has also proven itself as a great attractor fly for brown trout.

Materials

Hook Head Thread Tail & body Weight Ribbing
Hanak L size 8 to 10 Glass bead Clear Mono Synthetic Living Fiber (SLF) in choice of colours Lead as required Oval or flat holographic tinsel

Process

A
  1. Place bead on hook and fix hook into vice. The bead is likely to be a bead designed for the jewellery industry and probably wont have one opening bigger than the other so it can on the hook from either side sometimes making it difficult to slide it round the bend of the hook.
  2. Wind the thread in touching turns from behind the bead to the bend of the hook
  3. Wind the thread forward to behind the bead and tie in a length of ribbing material.
  4. Tie the ribbing material along the top of the hook shank all the way to the bend of the hook. I load my holographic tinsels on to bobbin holders so that it is easier to manage and to reduce wastage.

B
  1. With the holographic tinsel on a bobbin holder you can just hang that bobbin over the back of the vice until it is needed again.
  2. Tease out a bunch of SLF about as long as the hook shank and tie it in at the bend of the hook with half facing to the rear as a tail and an equal amount facing up the hook shank.

C
  1. Fold the SLF that is facing up the hook shank back over the tail, doubling its thickness and lock it into position wit a couple of firm wraps of thread.
  2. Form a dubbing loop at the bend of the hook and load it with SLF.
  3. Take the thread forward to behind the bead.

D
  1. Twist the loaded dubbing loop into a rope.

E
  1. using a piece of Velcro tease the fibers out along the length of the dubbing loop rope.

F
  1. Wind the SLF rope along the shank of the hook to the bead in touching turns.
  2. Tie the dubbing rope off and trim the excess.

G
  1. Wind the ribbing material forward forming 4 or 5 segments along the body of the fly.
  2. Tie the ribbing material off behind the bead and trim the excess.
  3. Using a piece of Velcro tease out the SLF along the body of the fly.

H
  1. Apply head cement over the bead and collar where the ribbing material was tied off.
