Cormorant – BH competition version

The cormorant fly is a popular loch fly and particularly in rainbow trout waters. The original tie has a peacock herl body with silver rib, no tag or tail and no lateral flash so this competition version has a few more trigger points. It can be tied with a brass or glass bead head and the colour of the wing can be varied to suit the fishery.

To get a full understanding of the tie for this fly have a look at the original Cormorant tie.

Materials

Hook Thread Tag Rib Body Wing Lateral flash
Medium shank wet fly (Tiemco 3769) Black Uni floss-hot red Silver or gold wire Holographic tinsel-clear Marabou X small holographic tinsel-red

Process

A
  1. Load a glass or brass bead onto the hook.
  2. Wind the thread in touching turns from behind the bead to the bend of the hook.
  3. Tie in a floss tag equal tin length to the gape of the hook.

B
  1. Tie in a length of fine wire. I prefer silver wire with a black wing and gold with an olive pr brown wing.
  2. My preference is to tie tie the wire in along the top of the hook shank all the way from behind the bead to the bend of the hook so as to maintain a relatively uniform under-body without any ridges.

C
  1. Tie in a length of pearl holographic tinsel.
  2. Again,my preference is to tie it in along the top of the hook shank all the way from behind the bead to the bend of the hook.

D
  1. Wind the tinsel forward in tight overlapping turns all the way to just behind the bead.
  2. Tie the tinsel off and trim away the excess.

E
  1. Pick up the wire and wind it forward in tight turns forming 6 to 8 segments and also reinforcing the fly body.
  2. Tie the wire off behind the bead and worry off the excess wire.

F
  1. Pick a bunch of marabou and position it with the tips directly above the tip of the tag.
  2. If the marabou is too wispy at its tips then leave the wing a little longer so that the thin wispy ends can be pinched off in line with the tip of the tag.

G
  1. Swap you hold over on the wing to your other hand and tie the marabou in place with a couple of firm turns of thread.
  2. Trim away the excess marabou butts with a sharp pair of scissors.
  3. Select a short length of thin red holographic tinsel and tie in a single strand at the 95% position on each side of the fly with the tinsel laying along the full length of the side of the fly. If when your fishing you fell that the water your fishing is too clear or that fish are put off on the day by too much flash it's a simple task to trim it away or shorten the lateral flash to suit conditions.
  4. Build up a neat collar of thread behind the bead and tie that off with a couple of half hitches of thread behind the bead.
  5. Trim the thread and varnish the collar.
