Fur fly

Conceptually these are a very simple fly but when tied with the right materials and in the right density they are a great all round fly. You can use them as a stream fly or for polaroiding or prospecting but in my opinion they are at their best when used as an attractor fly in a team of loch style flies. Choice of fur is important. If you can get died kangaroo that's OK but my preference is rabbit fur off a zonker strip.

Materials

Hook Thread Tail (optional) Body
10-14 Tiemco 3769 Blood red Rabbit fur Rabbit fur

Process

A
  1. Wind the thread in touching turns to the bend of the hook.
  2. Tie in a tail of rabbit fur equal in length to the length of the hook.
  3. For size #12 Fur Flies, which is my standard size, I add 5 wraps of .010mm lead wire (or 3 wraps of .015mm lead wire)  to ensure that they have negative buoyancy and also to impart and up and down swimming action.

B
  1. Form a dubbing loop at the bend of the hook.
  2. Load the dubbing loop with rabbit fur.

C
  1. Twist the dubbing loop up to form a dubbing rope.
  2. Wind the dubbing rope forward in touching turns to the eye of the hook.
  3. Tie the dubbing rope off and trim the excess.

D
  1. Build up a nice head of thread.
  2. Whip finish the thread and varnish the head of the fly
