Jiggy head

Jiggy heads are similar to bead heads except they are designed for salt water use and they have an obvious fish head shape and have a recessed area on each side incorporated to accommodate stick on holographic eyes. They are also covered with epoxy once the fly is tied. They were designed by Bob Popovics for use on flies that are fished deep in a jig fashion for pelagic fish.

Materials

Hook Thread Weight Wing Body Beard
Stainless steel Heavy white thread Jiggy head Buck tail Super hair Super hair

Process

A
  1. Slide a jiggy bead over the eye of the hook and attach the thread to the hook shank.

B
  1. Wind some lead wire around the hook shank directly behind the jiggy bead and push it up into the hollow inside.

C
  1. Tie a bunch of buck tail onto the top of the hook.
  2. The tail can  extend beyond the bend of the hook up to 2 hook lengths but the compromise is increased viability against slower sink rate and the  longer the tail the greater chance of short takes.

D
  1. Turn the fly over in the vice and tie in a bunch of Super hair the same length as the tail.

E
  1. Tie in a second bunch of super hair that is lighter in colour than the body material.
  2. Tie off and trim the thread.
  3. Turn back over in the vice.

F
  1. Fix stick on holographic eyes into the recesses in the jiggy bead.
  2. Apply and liberal coat of 5 minute epoxy to the bead and where the tail materials are tied in and rotate the fly until the epoxy goes off.
