Leader set up – 50lb with fastach connection and in-leader stinger

As the name implies this leader set up has a Mustard size 4 Fastach clip at the business end and a #4/0 Gamakatsu or Mustard live bait stinger after that. It is my goto leader for night time fishing of big soft plastics and PTE lures that have either only one hook or have a a couple of trebles but are still under gunned when it comes to handling big barra. I also use it when fishing similar baits when fishing offshore and I am targeting big pelagics with deep presentations and fast retrieves. The Fastach clip is important as it allows me to easily change my bait as conditions change during a fishing session or baits get damaged. The leader material I use is 50lb Sunline FC100.

You can of course adjust this leader set up for lighter and heavier leader set ups.

I start by connecting a stinger hook and Fasthach clip to what will be the business end of my leader, then I spool off the amount of leader required and connect that to my the 30lb braided backing with an FG knot.

Barra night rig

The first step is to thread a size #5/0 Mustard or Gamakatsu live bait hook onto the line from the underside so that the leader will run along the back of the hook shank in the finished knot. Slide that up the leader out of the way for the time being.

  1. The first step is to thread a size #5/0 Mustard or Gamakatsu live bait hook onto the line from the underside so that the leader will run along the back of the hook shank in the finished knot.

  1. Slide that up the leader out of the way for the time being.
  2. Tie a size #4 Mustard Fastach clip on by the tow point end using a tight three turn uni knot. Trim away the most of the tag end but leave just enough to be able to use your split ring pliers to tighten it if the stiffness of the line loosens it up … this often happens with 50lb+ fluorocarbon but not so much with lighter fluorocarbon or softer monofilament.

C
  1. Slide the hook back down the line so that Fastach clip overlaps the rear half of the stinger hook.To make this snell knot successful it's important that the position of the Fastach clip and the line running to the Fastach clip are held along the top of the hook shank throughout the tie.

  1. Whilst holding the hook and stinger in place  pull enough of the leader through the eye of the hook and form a loop about 3” in diameter on the opposite side to the step above i.e. under the hook shank. As you practice this knot you will work out how big the loop works best for you.

  1. Up till ow you have been holding he hook and stinger with your left hand. Transfer the hook and stinger to your right hand without changing the location of the loop in the line. Your grip needs to be firm and as close to the  eye of the stinger hook as possible. You need to hold all that in that position until you cinch the knot up.

  1. This is tricky but what you now need to do is to grip that part of the loop that is above the hook shank and wind eight touching turns of the loop down toward the bend of the hook taking care to ensure that the Fastach clip is not tangled up in those turns. In this photo you can see that 5 wraps of the line have been made down the shank of the shank of the stinger but in the process it has become knotted up ... which is common is common ... keep you calm and untangle the line with the fingers of your left hand and complete the last thee wraps.
  2. When you have completed those 8 turns, still keeping the tension in place with your right hand take a firm grip on the line running though the eye of the hook and progressively tighten the This is also tricky as you will be dealing with 8 twists in the line that you’re straightening up as you pull the leader through the eye of the hook but a little bit of saliva will help this step. Don’t over tighten the knot at this stage.

G
  1. Whilst the knot is firm but not tight make sure that the line that attaches to the Fastach clip runs neatly along the top of the hook shank and that the knot is as close to the eye of the hook as possible. When you happy with that tighten the knot right up

  1. This is a versatile knot and can be tied on whats left of your leader if there is enough left over after a break off.

Can be tied to new leader material which is still on the spool.

Can be pre-tied and kept in a plastic bag in your tackle box.

If you leader is not yet attached to your braid backing my preference is to connect it using an FG knot.

In all case I like my leader to be long enough so that when standing in a boat the connection to the backing is just outside the reel and when the rod is held horizontal the lure is about a foot or so outside the tip of the rod. For me with a 7-foot rod which has the reel seat about 2 foot from the butt of the rod that give me a leader the same length as the rod i.e. 7 feet.
