Legs – flat over thorax legs

Although this is a nifty way of representing legs on a fly, particularly a nymph, it is not used very often.

Process

A
  1. Tie the fly to the stage where it is ready for the thorax to be tied.

B
  1. Tie your wing casing material in as you would normally do.

C
  1. Select a hackle feather with barbules between 1/2 and the full gape of the hook long.

D
  1. Tie the hackle feather in with the dull side up.
  2. If you tie the hackle in by the butt the shortest legs will be toward the front of the thorax and if you tie the hackle in by the tip the shortest legs will be toward the back of the thorax.

E
  1. Build up the thorax as you normally do.

F
  1. Pull the hackle forward and tie it off at the eye of the hook.

G
  1. Pull the wing casing over the top of the fly and tie it off behind the eye of the hook.
  2. Trim the excess hackle and wing casing material.
  3. Build up a neat head, whip finish and varnish the head.
