Mini pupa

There are a number of pupa that are very small yet still very important protein sources on the trouts menu. These include the pupa of midges i.e. Chironomids and of course pupa of what is often called 'anglers cure' or 'smut flies' but really are the emerging nymph of the Caenis Mayflies.  In any case when fish are on these, and other very small pupa, because they occur in such large numbers they often go into a feeding pattern that excludes other food sources. If that's the case you do want a small fly to offer them but then its a trade of between getting a hit and having a hook that will stick to and hold the fish. This fly may do the job. as its tied on a Wingaersheek grub hook which has a better than average gape and bite for its size.

Materials

  1. Wind the thread from the 95% position to part way round the bend of the hook.
  2. Tie in a length of fine red holographic tinsel.
  3. Wind the thread forward forming a slim cigar shaped body over the rear 75% of the available space.

B
  1. Trim the tag down to size. on this size #18 hook the tag is just 2-3 mm long but obvious enough to help the fly to stand out amongst a a mass of naturals and to be a trigger point.
  2. Tie a single strand of peacock herl onto the shank directly in front of the body.

C
  1. Form the herl into a rope with the thread and wind it forward to just behind the eye of the hook.
  2. Tie the herl of and trim the excess.
  3. Build up a net thread head.
