Stone fly

Stoneflies thrive in the rubble of cold well oxygenated rivers & streams. They are an available food source throughout the season and fish may feed on them to the exclusion of all other food sources particularly during hatches. The nymphs crawl along the bottom and exit the water at the stream or river edge where they hatch into stoneflies. To imitate this action the fly must be well weighted. Colors include browns, olives, tans and blacks.

because this is a complicated fly I have done some pen sketches to assist in following the recipe below.

Materials

Hook Thread Fine lead wire Tail and antenna Rib Body, thorax and head Wing case Legs
8 to 12 Tiemco 3769 Brown Fine lead wire. Turkey biots Fine copper wire Squirrel dubbing in colour to suit. Three separate sections of turkey feather clipped to shape and lacquered prior to tying. Rubber or silicon legs

Process

A
  1. Wind the thread in touching turns one third of the way down the hook shank.
  2. Tie in a matching set of turkey biots V style for the antenna. They should only be between 1/2 and 2/3 as long as the shank of the hook.
  3. Wind the thread in touching turns half way down the hook shank.
  4. Add lead wire to most of the front half of the hook sank but taking care not to encroach on the last 5% or so of the hook shank directly behind the eye of the hook.

B
  1. Wind the thread in touching turns to the bend of the hook.
  2. Tie in a matching set of turkey biots V style for the tail. They should only be between 2/3 and 3/4 as long as the shank of the hook.
  3. Tie in a length of fine copper wire.

C
  1. Using the single strand dubbing technique dub on a body that tapers up to the thorax and then down to a little way behind the eye of the hook.
  2. Wind the wire forward to behind the eye of the hook dividing the body into 8 & 10 segments.
  3. Worry off the excess wire.
  4. Return the thread to the 2/3 position.

D
  1. After lacquering a section of turkey feather and letting it dry cut cut a feather slip with a V at the end.

E
  1. Tie the feather slip on top of the fly with the tips of the V roughly at the 1/3 position.

F
  1. Tie in a length of rubber leg material on each side of the fly 'Chernobyl style' at the 2/3 position.
  2. Now tie a little dubbing over the tread securing the first wing case segment and the legs to hide the thread.

G
  1. Take a length of scrap wire and, pull the legs back along the body and temporarily tie them against the body so they wont be in your way.

H
  1. Using the same feather slip that you prepared in step D cut a V at the end. .
  2. Tie the feather slip on top of the fly with the tips of the V just forward of the slip you tied in at step E.
  3. Repeat this process with the third wing case segment. The V for that segment should be tied in directly behind the eye of the hooks and the V should finish just in front of the second V tied in at step H2.
  4. Whip finish & varnish.
