Although this is a nifty way of representing legs on a fly, particularly a nymph, it is not used very often.

Process
A |
- Wind the thread in touching turns to the bend of the hook.
- Tie in a tail equal 1/2 to 2/3 the length of the hook shank. Resist the temptation to make the tail too bulky and too long.
- Tie in a length of copper wire.
- If you going to add weight to the fly now is the time to do it. One of the easiest ways is to use lead wire. Wind the lead wire around the hook shank placing it as far forward as possible. This will enhance the swimming action of the fly. adding weight to a fly.
- Wind the thread forward and then back over the lead to secure it in position. You can also add a drop of head varnish if you like.
- There are of course other ways of adding weight to a fly.
C |
- Dub on a body starting at almost nothing and gradually increasing in width along the back half of the fly.
- Wind the copper wire along the body of the fly forming 5 or 6 segments.
- Tie the copper wire off at the half way point and worry the excess copper wire off.
A |
- Tie the fly to the stage where it is ready for the thorax to be tied.
B |
- Select a hackle feather with barbules between 1/2 and the full gape of the hook long.
C |
- Tie the hackle feather in with the dull side up.
- If you tie the hackle in by the butt the shortest legs will be toward the front of the thorax and if you tie the hackle in by the tip the shortest legs will be toward the back of the thorax.
D |
- Build up the thorax as you normally do.
E |
- Pull the hackle forward and tie it off at the eye of the hook.
F |
- Pull the wing casing over the top of the fly and tie it off behind the eye of the hook.
- Trim the excess hackle and wing casing material.
- Build up a neat head, whip finish and varnish the head.
