Booby blob

Both boobies and blobs are each tremendous search flies in their own right particularly for stocked rainbow trout. This fly presents the best of both of those worlds and has the head an tail of a booby and the body of a blob. With a little flash in the tail it's one screamer of an attractor pattern.

Best fished on a 2 or preferably a 3 fly loch style leader connected to a Type 3 to 5 sinking line. I like the booby blob as the bob fly (top dropper) and a weighted bugger on the point to anchor the team. On the middle I try to match the hatch or what from research or experience you expect to be on the trout's menu at the time as best I can. Put out a clean long cast, count the team down to the desired depth and then work through a range of retrieves from fast roly poly to very slow twitch retrieves. Always hang you flies as that can be the most important fart of your retrieve some days.

Process

A

    Add the booby eyes.

  1. like to use thicker thread when tying in booby eyes so that I don't take the risk of cutting the boob eyes off with thin sharp thread either when I tie the fly or when the fly is attacked by a fish.
  2. Build up a base of thread over the front third of the hook shank and position the thread in the middle of that base.

B
  1. Prepare your boob eyes. I have used 1/4 of a 4mm Hends booby eyes tube for this fly.
  2. Round the edges of the booby eyes off with a sharp pair of scissors and tie the eyes in using firm figure of eight wraps of thread.
  3. Continue winding the thread in tight touching turns down the hook shank to just above the point of the hook.

C

I build my marabou tail for these flies in three levels.

  1. For the first level take about half the marabou you have selected for the tail and tie it in with the tips extending a distance equal to the length of the hook.

D

For the second level I like to add 6 strands of silver angel hair to the tail and do it at this stage so that it will be partially covered with the next layer of marabou rather than it being on the outside of the tail. Angle hair is very thin and a bit difficult to work with so I suggest you tie it in in two steps.

  1. The first step for this level is to tie it in 3 lengths of angle hair with the butt ends extending behind the fly the same distance as the tail and with the balance of the angel hair still pointing forward.

E
  1. The second step in tying in the angle hair is to take the tips of the angel hair that are pointing forward and pull them around so that they are pointing back with the other two half's of the same strands.
  2. Lock the angel hair in position with a couple of firm wraps of thread and take a couple of half hitches to lock everything in place.
  3. Trim away any excess angle hair behind the tail.

F
  1. The final level of the tail is to tie in the remainder of the marabou you selected for the tail directly on top of the first half of the tail and the 4 strands of angel hair to complete the tail.

And now the body of the fly.

  1. Select a length of FNF jelly chenille and tie that in on top of the hook shank in the gap between the marabou tail and the booby eyes.
  2. Take the thread forward to behind the booby eyes.

H
  1. Wind the FNF chenille forward in tight touching turns. This is the same material used to make blobs and it ties in better if you wet it and stroke the fibres back between each wrap of the FMH chenille.
  2. Tie the FNF chenille off directly behind the eye of the hook and trim away the excess.

I
  1. Take your thread a forward to in front of the booby eyes and whip finish the fly behind the eye of the hook and trim the thread away.
  2. To finish this fly I generally put just a little UV varnish over the whip finish and the tie in of the booby eyes.
