{{+1}}Christmas Island Special – pearl pink{{-1}}
{{start}}
There are a lot of colour combinations of Christmas Island Special (CXI) flies that my mates and I have seen on our various trips to Christmas Island and Aitutaki. Some work sometimes and not others and some work more often than not.
The prawn pink coloured and my version of the ring burner he CXI special are my two go to colours and each of those take up twice as much spac as any other colour version in my CXI fly box.
Below is my list of CXI flies that more often than not consistently work. From these I look for local knowledge from my guides as to which fly they will think will work at any given time.
The biggest mistake that guides apparently see is that flies are often overdressed and the proportions below are not followed.
These are the other colours that I find work consistently:
- Pearl prawn - pink (as tied below)
- Orange (Ring burner is a similar fly)
- Pearl prawn - orange
- Pink
- Mauve pearl (Electric camel is a similar fly)
- Yellow pearl
- Pearl prawn - chartreuse pear
Materials for CXI Special - pearl
I have tied this fly below on a size #6 Spirit River SW07 and Fin Racoon over-wing.

Pace yourself with the next two steps steps because you want to finish them with enough krystal flash left over for use as the under-wing.

{{+1}}Shrek – Chatto’s viva{{-1}}
{{start}}
It seems that these days the term 'VIVA' has been given to the very popular and successful colour combination of light green or chartreuse and black.{{end}}
{{+1}}Squirmy caddis{{-1}}
{{start}}
Somewhat of a fusion of a traditional caddis pupa emerger and a squirmy wormy this fly has earned a place in my fly box as a great middle or top dropper fly for both a loch style team and a river team.{{end}}
{{+1}}Lakes – loch style basics{{-1}}
{{start}}
I was introduced to loch style fly fishing when I became involved in competition fly fishing through Fly Fish Australia and i now regard it as one of my preferred fly fishing techniques and certainly a way of targeting fish that I was not previously aware could be caught.{{end}}
{{+1}}TBH Dross nymph variant{{-1}}
{{start}}
In 2018 I was introduced a fly called a Droz nymph that had skipped my attention even though it has been used for several seasons with great success in Tasmania, Victoria and even NSW. It's now one of the first river flies that I tie on.{{end}}
{{+1}}Leaders for trout in lakes & rivers{{-1}}
{{start}}
When it all boils down setting up a loch style or river leader doesn't have to be as complicated as it's made out to be. I have set out below how I set up my trout leaders for both social and competition fly fishing and I hope that will provide some incite for you.{{end}}
{{+1}}Chatto’s fizzer{{-1}}
{{start}}
This fly swims well and the propeller at the front adds an element of action that fish find enticing. You can tie this fly in any colour combination to mimic the colour of some of the more popular lure colours that your mates that fish the "dark side" use so successfully.{{end}}
{{+1}}Christmas Island Special – mauve{{-1}}
{{start}}
This is the newest addition to my top six CXI special colours. It's a little more subtle than the electric camel but I think that adds to its appeal to bone fish.{{end}}
{{+1}}CXI Special – Orange (AKA Ring Burner){{-1}}
{{start}}
Definitely one of my favourite colours for a CXI fly and an absolute must in my top 6 colour selection.{{end}}
{{+1}}Christmas Island Special – orange pearl{{-1}}
{{start}}
Orange pearl is one of my favourite colour combinations of Christmas Island Special (CXI) flies that my mates and I have seen on our various trips to Christmas Island and Aitutaki. It is generally in the top 6 producing colours of CXI flies on every trips.{{end}}
