TBH Dross nymph variant

In 2018 I represented Australia at the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships in N. Ireland and in the lead up to that event I was introduced to a fly called a Droz nymph that had skipped my attention even though it has been used for several seasons with great success in Tasmania, Victoria and even NSW.

Anyway the big change to my fly box in 2019 was that I added an unweighted and a tungsten bead-head version, as tied below, of that Droz nymph to my trout river wet fly box.

Materials

Hook Bead Thread Tail Hot butt Rib Body Thorax
Size #12 to #16 grub hook Copper or silver tungsten bead: 3.0mm for size #12, 2.5mm for size #14 and 2.0mm for size #16 Black uni-thread 6/0 Coq de Lion grey/brown cock hackle fibres Red flashabou Small opal Mirage tinsel Black uni-thread 6/0 Hends spectra dubbing 46/peacock

Process

A
  1. Most beads have a large opening at one end and a smaller opening at the other. Slide a bead over the point of the hook small opening first and position it behind the eye of the hook.
  2. Tie your thread in behind the bead and then wind the thread in touching turns to about a third of the way around the bend of the hook.

  2. Take your mirage tinsel and carefully stretch it untill it thins doen to about half its original width and turns blue.
  3. Tie the tip of the now blue mirage Tinsel in just in front of the flashabou hot butt.
  4. Build up a neat body of thread between the hot butt and the bead that is just a little thicker at the bead end than at the hot butt end.

  1. Pick up the tag end of the mirage tinsel and wing the mirage tinsel forward in open turns forming 6 or 7 body segments along the body of the fly.

H
  1. Take a single turn of the thread and spectre dubbing rope and pinch of any excess spectre dubbing.
  2. Whip finish behind the bead and trim away the excess thread.
  3. Apply a thin coat of varnish to the bead and the whip finish to complete the fly. If you don't varnish the bead it will quite quickly.
