TBH flash back nymph

Flash back nymphs have been around for a long time but they still work. In my view the only trick associated with this fly is to select an appropriate flash material for the flash back. I favour several strands of sparkle flash or similar material rather than a single strand of flat Lurex or tinsel. I tie black, brown and olive versions in a couple of sizes.

Materials

Hook Thread Weight Tail Rib Body Flash back Thorax
Tiemco 3761 size #8 to #14 Black TBH + lead wire Black hackle fibres Fine silver wire Black seals fur dubbing Sparkle flash or similar 50/50 black seals fur and black peacock dubbing

Process

A
  1. Most beads have a large opening at one end and a smaller opening at the other. Slide a copper tungsten bead over the point of the hook small opening first and position it behind the eye of the hook.
  2. Wind the thread in touching turns to the bend of the hook.
  3. If your going to add extra weight do that know . . . I always do because I want this fly to sink quickly and stay in the zone longer.
  4. Tie in a tail equal 1/2 to 2/3 the length of the hook shank. Resist the temptation to make the tail too bulky and too long.
Tie in a length of silver wire.

B
  1. Dub on a body starting at almost nothing and gradually increasing in width along the length of the fly. Stop a distance roughly equal to the diameter of the bead from the bead.
  2. Wind the wire ribbing along the body of the fly forming 4 or 5 segments.
  3. Tie the copper wire off behind the bead and break off the excess wire.
  4. Take two strands of sparkle flash and fold it 4 times.
  5. Tie the strands of sparkle flash in on top of the hook shank at about half way along the hook shank.

C
  1. Mix a composite dubbing of 20% seals fur and 50% UV black peacock dubbing.
Dub on a thorax between where the wing casing is tied in and the back of the bead.
  2. Pull the loose ends of the strands of sparkle flash forward to form the wing casing and lock them into position with several wraps of thread directly behind the bead head.
  3. Take a piece of Velcro and tease out some of the dubbing from the thorax to represent legs.

D
  1. Trim the but ends of the sparkle flash directly behind the bead head the bead.
  2. Whip finish behind the bead head, trim the thread and varnish the thread behind the bead and the bead itself. If you don't varnish the bead it will tarnish quite quickly.
