Tiger midge

This is a great dropper fly in lakes where there are populations of midge and my good mate Peter Walsh, who first came up with particular tie, fishes it with plenty of confidence and results. It's a lot like my Bibio variant except that the dominant colours are black and orange as apposed to back and red and it is tied without a front hackle.

Materials

Hook Thread Rib Body Thorax
Knapek G #14 or #16 Black Fine silver wire Black Nc.46 spectra dubbing Orange Nc.35 spectra dubbing

Process

A
  1. Wind the thread in touching turns to the bend of the hook. I like to use Knapek Lure hooks or Hanak Grub hooks for this fly but other short open gape wet or grub hook will do.
  2. If the hook is made with fine wire you should add 2 or 3 wraps of fine lead wire to the front half of the hook shank.
  3. Tie in the ribbing material.

B
  1. Think about the body being 75% black and 25% orange from where you tied the wire in and the 95% position.
  2. Dub on a reasonably uniform diameter black spectra dubbing on the rear 75% of the hook.

C
  1. Dub on a reasonably uniform diameter orange spectra dubbing between the body and the 95% position of the hook..

D
  1. Wind the wire forward creating 4 or 5 equal segments.
  2. Take a couple of extra wraps of the wire just behind the eye of the hook and worry off the excess

E
  1. Build up a neat thread head.
  2. Whip finish and varnish the head.
