Christmas Island Special – chartreuse

In plenty of salt water fisheries the saying "if it's not chartreuse it's not any use" applies so it's no surprise that this fly is included in my top six CXI flies list.

Lake Maroon – great idea

Thanks about your email looking for information on Lake Maroon. I love Maroon and have had a couple of podium finishes there in Fly Fish Australia competitions. I am not aware of any guides that fish the Lake Maroon area so I cant help you there but I have set out a little information on my web site that may help with your expedition there.

Clouser – synthetic MKII

This is my favourite version of the clouser for use when targeting fish holding deep and is tied with H2O slinky fibre which makes the fly present as slightly translucent.

Slow roller

I fish these lightly weighted "slow rollers" on an intermediate or fast sink lines and a 30lb Maxima Ultra Green leader of about rod length. If you can see fish holding amongst timber put in a good cast beyond the timber and then count your line down and then work repetitive slow roly poly retrieves through the area.

Spotters Prescription Sun Glasses

I am cranky with myself for not taking up Spotters 2018 Fly Fish Australia teams sponsorship offer for the 2018 Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships (N. Ireland). I didn't take it up because I still had my original Spotters and my Spotters that were sponsored to me via Fly Fish Australia for the 2016 Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships (Canada) ... I love my Spotters.

Spotters have been sponsors of Fly Fish Australia representative teams for the World Fly Fishing Championships and the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships. As past team member of World, Commonwealth and Oceania teams, Past President of FFA and the most recent life members of FFA I just wanted to put it out that how good their glasses are and how much all our members appreciate their sponsorship. Thanks #Spotters.

Candy – pelagic

Matching the hatch is the key to catching pelagics such as queenfish, tuna, Australian salmon and herring on fly. These unweighted flies are like candy to pelagic fish because they closely match the form and function of a lot of naturals they are targeting. In smaller sizes, particularly in pink, they are a handy fly for targeting flathead and bream in estuary waters.

Lures

Barramundi

Top 2 feet

Imakatsu Gekiasa II Alive Roller. This is a bass lure and for barra its suggest that you upgrade to VMC trebles #1 (No1). With a skinny profile with straight sides this is a 105cm / 10.5 gram lure which lends itself to being fished in shallow eater. It is buoyant in the head so on the pause the hooks dangle below the lure and when jerked the resting angle means that the lure will not dive too deep on a short sharp jerk. The bib is small and relatively sharp and will often cut week off.

I favour #704 which I describe as mullet colours with a splash of orange on the belly for fresh water applications and 723 which is gold for salt water applications.

1.0 to 3.0 meters

Bomber BMB Long ABM5HD Black/red/yellow (Also called mullet)
Bomber BMB Long XMK0HD Gold Bomber

Fishing the Transam

Cast your line out so that when you retrieve the Transam will go through the target zone. Watch the Transam sinks which will be evident by the line going soft. Lift the rod enough to feel the Transam
vibrate then let it sink again. Repeat process back to the boat. If fish are holding off the bottom count the Transam down to the desired depth and fish up from there.

Mangrove Jack

Surface

Realis Pencil 8.5 orange/yellow opaque

Sand flats GT's, Goldens, Permit etc

Chasebaits Crusty Crab in pumpkin colour

FCC50-03, 50mm, 4.5grams #2, sink rate 3.2sec/meter. Vertical sinking, cast and retrieve.
"The crusty crab has been modeled on the common Australian shore crab. It is perfectly balanced to always flip on to its belly when cast. With rapid vibrating legs, 10x material and a super strong fine gauge hook, the crusty crab is tough and ready for battle. Slow roll, jig or just leave in the rod holder. Fish will think this crab is real and too tasty to refuse. Target species: Bream, flathead, whition , taylor, mangrove jack, trevally and any species that love to feed on small crabs."

Bottom Bashing

So here is my set up for bottom bashing.

Bottom bashing outfit

Diawa Sundowber SD 171. 6-8 kg 1.85 meters. Snapper rod.

Shimano Stradic C5000 XG
50LB Aldi yellow braid

To the end of the braid add two rod lengths of 80 lb of Sunline System Shock Leader to the braid using
a FG knot. At the business add a Black Magic 60kg Rolling swivel size 1 using an unlocked blood knot. The idea of this leader is to give you a bit of stretch in the system and something to hold onto when landing a fish ... you obviously can not grab onto the braided leader for that purpose.

FG knot
A

  1. Cross the braid over the tip of the mono or fluro
  2. take turn over the back side mono then the front side. Repeat that 3 time
  3. Stretch the braid to make sure it is tight

B

  1. Repeat A 5 time to give 20 turns of the braid over the mono.

C

  1. Take on half hitch over just the braid.
  2. Then take 2 double hitches over the braid and the mono.

D

  1. Stretch out the braid untill it changes colour and locks into the mono.

E

  1. Trim the tag end of the mono tight with the end of the FG knot

F

  1. Take a further 4 double hitches

I tie my leader from the business end fist.

If I am using only 1 hook I tie that on using an unlocked blood knot.

If I am using two hooks I tie my snelled hook on first and then add my point hook just 3 inches clear of the snelled hook using an unlocked blood knot.

Cut your tippet from the tippet spool, add the lead sinker and the tie it to the leader swivel using an unlocked blood knot.
